PRESS RELEASE

In 2017, the 9th of February was designated as “International Greek Language Day”.  The celebration of the Greek language aims to highlight the pivotal role that it has played through the ages. The Greek language with its different forms spans a period of 4000 years, having almost the same alphabet.

To recognize and celebrate the Greek language around the world for its contribution in shaping Western civilization throughout the centuries, this date was selected as it is the official date commemorating the Greek National Poet, Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the Greek national anthem, “Hymn to Liberty”.

Greek language is a foundational language for the European civilization, in scientific terms and usage, especially in astronomy, mathematics, logic, and philosophy. Countless Greek words enrich other languages, culminating in the international medical terminology in which about 80 percent of the scientific terms have a Greek root. Ancient Greek literature includes works such as the epic poems of the Iliad and the Odyssey, Platonic dialogues and the works of Aristotle.

For the celebration of the “International Greek Language Day”, the National Museum of Literature with the Greek Embassy in Bucharest, with the support of the Hellenic Union of Romania and the Hellenic-Romanian Bilateral Chamber of Commerce, will organize a cultural event on February 9th, 2023, 18:00, at the National Museum of Literature (Strada Nicolae Crețulescu 8) with the aim to emphasize the co-relation of the Greek language and culture, with the Romanian language and culture.

The Ambassador of Greece Mrs. Sofia Grammata will deliver a greeting speech for the event. Main Speaker: PhD Professor Tudor Dinu – University of Bucharest, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature – Classic and Modern Greek Studies on the subject: “Τhe influence of the Greek to the Romanian Language”.

Poems and fragments of the Greek Literature will be recited by the pupils of the Greek School of Bucharest “Athena”, and the students of the University of Bucharest. Students form the Lectorate of Neohellenic Studies of the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University (Iasi) will perform Greek songs and poetry translated into the Romanian language.
